From Melissa Schnure

Every year, more than 35,000 people die from suicide. It is currently the 10th leading cause of death in the United States and the number of people who die by suicide continues to increase every year. My brother Mitchell Schnure unfortunately lost his battle with depression and anxiety and died of suicide on October 1st, 2011–just a four days before his 23rd birthday.

Mitchell was the most talented pianist, friendly and outgoing companion, devoted worker, family-oriented person, and dedicated piano teacher to his peers. There are no words to describe the pain, confusion, and sadness his family, friends, co-workers, and fellow students have experienced.

Through all of this, my family and I are trying to spread the word about suicide prevention and raise awareness on the disease. I could not be more excited to be a part of planning an event that will raise money for this cause. With the partnership of Matt Dektas and his Ballers for a Cause and the support of Five Seasons Sports Club, we have dedicated this fundraiser to raising awareness of suicide and suicide prevention in memory of Mitchell Schnure.

The proceeds from this event will be donated to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and Penguins and Pianos: The Mitchell Schnure Music Scholarship Fund. With your help, we can help bring more light to suicide awareness. I can not wait to see all of you at this event!

Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
Melissa Schnure
